Fawlty Towers

May 7, 2010

Up very early to hear the news…oh dear, the Great British Public have spoken….and said ‘Errrrr….’

So I went to the gym, where there’s usually ghastly rock on the loudspeaker and a ‘Location’, location’ type house programme on TV. Today it was BBC 24hr news. James Landale was explaining to to GBP  ’what happens now’; the subtitles told us  that the PM had sent for the Cabinet Secretary and asked him to bring ‘the Cabinet ‘Manuel’ to tell him how to proceed. How cheering, so it really is Fawlty Towers at No 10?

” Don`t mention the war !” Old Fawlty Towers joke.

“and asked him to bring ‘the Cabinet ‘Manuel’ to tell him how to proceed.”

As usual the old British problem, we in IT call that an RTFM error ! I won`t eleborate.

So Nick Clegg`s Lib Dems lost seats, has the smallest number of seats of the three main parties and holds all the power. Phew, I`m glad so many didn`t vote for GB and gave him back power !

    ” Basil…..Basil….Coming..darling”

This is why I think our love affair with Democracy is itself ridiculous. yes yes I know…its the only valid and legitimate form of Government and all others are tyranny…

…but in the Old Days when we let the Monarchy have some real Power this crisis wouldn’t be nearly so large as it is now. The Queen should just be allowed to select a new Prime Minister from whichever Parliamentarian she wishes… perhaps a Member of the House of Lords. ( Lets include the disenfranchised Hereditary Lords who no longer sit.)

Its bad enough the House of Commons has become such an embarrassment, but it pains me to think of this rather minor problem as being such a major one, and shows the flaw on relying too heavily on an overstuffed Popularity contest in deciding who should lead.

Its not like it matters anyway, with a Hung Parliament, soon enough someone will disagree over the Hour Lunch should be served and a vote of No Confidence will ensue…

The tone of the reporting on the BBC is getting lower and lower for these Coalition talks.
The latest one was a reference to the smell of a rugby prop forward’s jock strap.

I don’t quite know why, but I have been laughing like a drain at the manouverings of the various parties and party leaders. It may be the way it is being reported!

Roll on the Progressive Alliance. At last it will be clear that the Nationalist parties are Left wing parties and not right wing ones, a difficult concept to grasp. At last a Labourite like me will be able to start learning Welsh with a clear conscience. Now where’s Bedd Gelert?

THAT must have been the most good humored election campaign in living memory as well, mainly due surely to the newly established leaders’ debate, which must have been compulsory listening.

I did not meet anybody who did NOT listen to at least part of it, and it would have been difficult to avoid!

The outcome too has been highly successful, in my view, and the remarks of the Labour Mr Burnham were surely right, that the Labour party needs to go, renew and revitalize with a new generation of members. That is what pluralism is all about.
